Sidmouth

In sidmouth 3 types of coastal protection are used to help keep the sea from eroding away the Cliffside:

 Sea wall:

Advantages: sea walls are very effective and they protect the coastline and prevent
flooding.

Disadvantages: Sea walls are very expensive to build and maintain, look very ugly on a beach and take lots of time to build as they are made out of concrete.

 Rock Amour:

Advantages: They are cheap to build and can be blended into the landscape making them less noticeable that the groynes or sea wall.

Disadvantages: They erode over time and can be displaced in a storm.

Groynes:

Advantages: : They are effective at stopping long shore drift and save beaches from being destroyed and creating a spit.

Disadvantages They can be broken by big waves, and can rot as they are made of wood. they are aren’t very nice to look at and can sometimes go wrong where can just  build up behind them which makes it look unattractive.

also on the 360 image of sidmouth to the north-east, part of the cliff has slidden due to it being soft rock and being saturated by water and also the weather. But this is hard to stop from happening as it is soft rock and is not affected by the sea much.

BEDZED: Explain why a named settlement you have studied can be considered to be sustainible:

The Beddington Zero Development Project (BedZED) is the largest UK eco community project experimenting in sustainable living.  urban planners are experimenting with designing homes to cope with the temperature rise predicted by 2080 to shut out the summer heat, conserve water and minimise energy. BedZED comprises homes that have no central heating or air conditioning but instead make full use of natural heating and lighting.BedZED's heating requirements were 88% less than normal houses of that size so were very sustainable for the environment. Bedzed has its own eco-friendly single generator of electricity and is able to capture rainwater that is then used for flushing toilets.

The apartments are finished to a high standard and face south to take advantage of solar gain. They are triple glazed and have high thermal insulation. Most rain water falling on the site is collected and reused so mains water consumption has been reduced by 67% compared to a power-shower household. Appliances are chosen to be water-efficient and use recycled water when possible.Hot-water consumption was 57% less than houses.

The Building materials were selected from renewable or recycled sources within 35 miles of the site, to minimize the energy required for transportation. The development works in partnership with the United Kingdom's leading car-sharing operator. Residents are encouraged to use this environmentally friendly electric and liquefied-petroleum-gas cars, which have priority over cars that burn petrol and diesel, and electricity is provided in parking spaces for charging electric cars and the residents' car mileage is 65% less!

The electrical power used, at 3 kilowatt hours per person per day, was 25% less than the UK average; 11% of this was produced by solar panels. The remainder normally would be produced by a combined-heat-and-power plant fueled by wood chips, but the installation company's financial problems have delayed use of the plant.

Bedzed is the future of eco-friendly houses. By 2080 the world will be having do as much as they can to keep C02 emitions down and make there lifestyles as sustainable as they can. In the world we live in today things like electricity, clean water, a comforatable home and cars are taken for granted, soon all the fossil fuels will run out and the world we live in will change dramatically! bedzed is just the start of a new eco-friendly age!

The Zabaleen

Who are they?
The Zabbaleen "garbage people" are an Egyptian community of mostly Coptic Christians who collect and dispose of Cairo's waste by feeding it to their pigs. The Zabbaleen generally performed this service very cheaply or for free, making a living by sorting the waste materials to reuse or recycle.

Where do they live?
A part Cairo known as Garbage City.

How do they make a living out of rubbish?

The Zabaleen buy rubbish or scavinge for it wherever they can, Organic matter is fed to live stock, and other materials are reused or sold, like cans and glass bottles.

In what ways to the Zabaleen offer a sustainible solution to waste disposal?

They make a living by taking away and sorting a small amount of the citys problem and use or recycle almost everything, This means that instead of more and more waste building up, its just goes round in a cylcle.

 What problems do they face?

The city is constantly exspanding, this means more people and more rubbish from the people, I think that they wont be able to keep up eventually, but for now they are doing a very useful job. there is also a much bigger problem in the city, many of Cairos dwellers are of the muslim religeon and they dont believe that messing around with rubbish is a very exceptable thing to do, this results in the Zabaleen not having as many helpers.

The programa Favela Barirrio

What is it?

In 1995, The Programa Favela Bairrio was launched in Rio de Janeiro as a self help scheme that seeks to develop shanty town slums into proud neighbourhoods. Most Children, once finished education are sent to work as tour guides for tourists going around the shanty towns. They get paid and is one of the main sources of work for young children as it can provide them with enough money to get food to survive.

How much is it and who pays for it?

The scheme cost more than $600 million which was supported financially by the IDB and national government.

Give some examples of infrastructure improvements:

Infrastructure improvements included the creation of essential services such as sewage systems, easily accessible water tapped in most places around each area, garbage removal so that the town doesn’t have rotting waste every corner you turn and making the shanty an unpleasant place to live and public lighting so that people can see at night and be safer on the load when it turns dark.

Community projects included the relocation of families to bigger and better housing for the demolishing of their previous housing to make way for wider roads. They also created after school counselling and leadership programs. It also included the creation of parks and playgrounds so that children can play and have fun and enjoy the lives they have. Also public spaces and paved streets so that the community is a much nicer placer to see and visit.

Why has the scheme be successful?

The scheme has transformed the lives of millions of people, who before didn’t have the chance to have an education. They lived in slums, often not suitable for human use it was smelly, dark, and generally not a nice place to have a life in. It has given the sense of community to the shanty towns which has also lowered the crime. The quality of life for the people had improved dramatically having no longer to walk round on mud being careful not to step in fences.

Five Ways To Reduce Traffic In Taunton

Park and rides

Park and rides are not used regularly enough and we just drive past them without a second thought or glance. They just keep cars out of the main part of the city so that traffic can't  build up. But at the moment alot of people are instead parking their cars in big carkparks and mutli-story car parks so that their cars are inside the town and are easy to get to from the city centre wereas if you used a park and ride you would have to walkd around with your shopping and wait for the bus but the upside of that is there are less cars causing traffic jams and frustration, and less pollution for the planet! this could help global warming decrese making the planet a better place to live in.

Multy story car parks

The high streets of taunton are the most busiest parts because of the shops, banks, offices etc.People want to be as close to the high streets as possible but there are very few available car parking spaces around. But the ones that have spaces that are near the high street cost nearly twice as much as if you would of parked outside!. Firstly multi-story car parks cost half the price it would to keep your car on the main street, you would be able to park your car for twice as long for half the price!

Buses and Public Transport

Public transoprtation is a great way to save unessacery journeys through cities like London. We suffer from traffic in cities because we use our individual transport to get to places, but the more sensible option would be to use buses and trains. Also if more of the public used buses no traffic would occur on the main roads because the majority would be traveling all together making the most of vehcile space meaning less un-nessacery cars traveling on the road. which also decreases Co2 emmitions!

Walking

walking is a great way to keep fit and healthy, is decreses traffic by making more people not use their cars making the roads less compact and making them calmer. walking is a slow proccess but is the only none cost in anyway type of transportation. although the time difference is greater than in a car it's better for the environment and better for your body and wallet.

Bicycles

bicyle lanes will encourage more people to cycle to work and to town instead of driving or catching public transport. It also gives you exercise to keep you fit and healthy and prduces no Co2 emmitions and is free alsong as you have a bike.

Princess Hay

1. Exeter was a small city as it has a cathedral but over the years has expanded and has become more popular. Since going through a stage of dereliction it has been regenerated and has a modernised feel especially around the new princess hay part of Exeter.

2. I think that urban redevelopment means when a city is redeveloped and changed. Older rural parts are becoming run down therefore need to be redeveloped. Over the years cities and towns like Exeter have changed considerably since the late 20th century, in 1979 Exeter was a nice place to go but as time passed by it lead to the shops become run down and old fashioned. The new shopping centre (princess hay) being built were the old shopping centre was.

3. Thomas sharp from Exeter’s city council, decided to plan and build Princess Hay after it was bombed in the blitz. The main reason of why this was built was because of the mass amount of space left after the bombings. It was the perfect eye catcher to bring in victims from other parts of the country and get Exeter thriving with people and tourists again.

Sharp's plans called for urban renewal with modern buildings, wide pavements, pedestrian areas and views of the cathedral and conservation of the old Roman City Walls. In fact the council couldn't afford to carry out Sharp's plans, but part of the city centre was rebuilt along his guidelines, and the brand new shopping centre of Princess Hay was created.

I believe that it was a good choice to do something with the spare space but rejecting to restore the old buildings and derelict parts of Exeter was not because most of the history that was left in Exeter was the focused on the cathedral.

4. Some of the resident’s objections for the design and redevelopment of Princess Hay was because of their concerns of conservation being affected, congestion of population, traffic, increased crime and the effect on the listed/older building. and that you could use the space to build a big theatre showing west end type productions also some zoo's and aquariums for parents to attract allsorts of people from across the globe to see rare animals and fish which would make Exeter not just a city for shopping in.

5.

·     Mixed land use for example mixed land use with residential areas, a variety of buildings in business/residential/leisure and full filling tourist’s needs and maintaining the history of the area. Town planners increasingly encourage people to live in the CBD. This creates a 24 hour city, and maximises potential of valuable land space.

·     Conservation is where improvements occur when a building or project is changed/restored in this case and the improvements are compared with the old parts, so you preserve the natural environment

·     Revitalise is when you bring something back to life by making it newer or adding something to make it stand out and making it more of an exciting place to be.

·     Regeneration means to improve and compare differences to make the project (or in this case Princess Hay’s) a better and regenerated part of Exeter.

·     Sustainable urban redevelopment is when it must meet the social needs of people whilst conserving the environment and enhancing the local economy.

6. Princess Hay’s is definitely revitalized, especially the new/modern buildings which are shown on the virtual tour. Debhanams is one of the many big chain stores that has been revitalized as is noticed easily because it is updated/modernized. Also the new restaurants and cafes really show off as they provide fine dining/ eating and look fantastic too.

7. Princess Hay’s is a great example of sustainable redevelopment because it covers the main three components to make it successful. These are economic, environmental and social. The situation for the shopping centre (princess hay) is superb because it suits these topics well and the individual buildings there-self really make this clear too.
